Transport escorts and traffic controllers
Transport escorts and traffic controllers regulate traffic and ensure the safety of road users. If you want to work as a transport escort or traffic controller in the Netherlands, you must satisfy the requirements of the Traffic Controllers Regulations 2009 (Regeling verkeersregelaars 2009). These requirements concern the training, appointment, assessment and equipment of transport escorts and traffic controllers.
Training and appointment
You must have passed an examination to be able to work as a transport escort or traffic controller. You will receive a certified testimonial, with which you can apply for an appointment card from the Department for Traffic Information and Traffic Management (Verkeerscentrum Nederland, VCNL) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. You must carry this card with you when you are working.
For information about examination procedures, please contact the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheid, CBR) and the Netherlands Traffic Controllers Foundation (Stichting Verkeersregelaars Nederland).
Traffic controllers for special events
The municipal authority may appoint traffic controllers to handle special events. They may be appointed for a specific period (no more than 12 months) or on a one-off basis for a particular event. The municipal authority can apply for an appointment card from the Department for Traffic Information and Traffic Management (VCNL) for special events traffic controllers who are appointed for a specific period. One-off special events traffic controllers do not receive an appointment card.
