Risk inventory and evaluation

If you own a business in the Netherlands and you employ staff, you are obliged to conduct a risk inventory and evaluation (RI&E). You must make the RI&E available for perusal at a location accessible by employees.

The RI&E must be performed before the official start of your business. When carrying out an RI&E, you must check:

  • which risks you and your employees encounter;
  • what measures you have taken in order to prevent harm to your own health and that of your employees;
  • what measures you are planning to take (Plan van Aanpak).

Drawing up a RI&E

More than 25 employees

You must be assisted by a prevention employee when drawing up the RI&E. A certified working conditions expert must test the RI&E.

At most 25 employees

You do not have to have the RI&E assessed by a working conditions expert if you use a recognised RI&E-instrument for drawing up the RI&E that has been developed by your branch organisation. You can find a summary of recognised RI&E instruments on Rie.nl.

RI&E for the water sports industry

An RI&E Workbook, including a CD-ROM, has been put together for water sports businesses. The HISWA Association makes this workbook available to both members and non-members. With the aid of an inventory chart, you can see which modules are mandatory for you and which modules are optional, depending on your business activities. Members of the HISWA Association can find information about the RI&E in HISWA Alert (i.e. the digital assistant on the association’s website).

Childcare organisations and infant playrooms can use the Risk Monitor (Risicomonitor) tool, which enables you to conduct risk inventories and draft action plans online. The Risk Monitor also includes an accident/incident registration module. The Risk Monitor is only available in Dutch.
