Records of trading in protected animals and plants

You are required to keep records if you trade in or own certain species of protected animals or plants. These species are specified in Section 2 of the Protected Animal and Plant Species (Ownership and Trade Records) Regulations (Regeling administratie bezit van en handel in beschermde dier- en plantsoorten). Your records must include information such as:

  • scientific generic name and quantity;
  • date and place of acquisition;
  • number of leg ring or microchip transponder;
  • name, address and country of the supplier;
  • country of origin;
  • number of corresponding CITES document;
  • name, address and country of the buyer.

You must keep documents such as invoices and consignment notes.

Please note: The technical requirements imposed by the Netherlands in respect of some protected animal and plant species differ from those of other EU Member States. If a protected animal or plant species is already allowed in another EU Member State, the authorities may ban its sale in the Netherlands only in exceptional cases.
