Preventing and fighting crime

If you run a business in the Netherlands and the business faces risks from criminal activities, you can take various measures. Dutch law sets clear limits as regards what preventive measures you can and cannot take. The Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel, KvK) can provide additional information on this subject. Regarding the prevention of cybercrime (crimes in which perpetrators use IT equipment), information about this subject can be found at Government.nl.

Safe Businesses Warranty

Cooperation with other business owners, the municipal authority, the police and the fire brigade is vital to promote safety at business locations and to combat crime. A joint approach will help you qualify for the Safe Businesses Warranty (Keurmerk Veilig Ondernemen, KVO). This hallmark is awarded by the Dutch Centre for Crime Prevention & Safety (Centrum voor Criminaliteitspreventie en Veiligheid, CCV). The warranty will reduce problems with trading losses and improve the image of your business location. As a KVO entrepreneur you will be eligible for benefits such as a discount on insurance premiums, tax benefits and subsidy benefits.

Filing a report with the police

If you have become a victim of theft, burglary, robbery or fraud, you can file a report with the police. You can do this either at a local police station, by phone or online.

For information about shop crime, prevention and your rights and obligations, please contact the National Board for the Retail Trade (Hoofdbedrijfschap Detailhandel, HBD).

Losses due to shoplifting

If you catch a shoplifter in the act, you can claim compensation of €151 from the shoplifter for the time spent dealing with the matter. If you participate in the ‘Settling the bill with shoplifters’ (Afrekenen met winkeldieven) scheme of the National Board for the Retail Trade, the Board will collect compensation from the shoplifter on your behalf.
