Permits for weapons and ammunition

In principle, the possession of all firearms and other weapons is prohibited in the Netherlands. Non-firearms include various types of knives, fake weapons, realistic-looking toys and air weapons, electroshock weapons and self-defence weapons. Depending on the act involving weapons and ammunition and the weapon category, you need a weapons permit (recognition, consent, authorisation or dispensation).

Recognition

You need a recognition for the use of weapons for commercial purposes (for example sale, rent or repair). You can apply for a recognition with the chief constable of the police force in your police region.

Consent

You need a consent for the import, export or transit of weapons. You can apply for a consent with the Central Import and Export Office (Centrale Dienst voor In- en Uitvoer, CDIU).

Authorisation

You need an authorisation for the transport of a weapon. You can apply for an authorisation for transport with the chief constable of the police force in your police region.

Dispensation

A dispensation is an individual exception to a statutory prohibition. You can apply for a dispensation with the Justis Department of the Ministry of Security and Justice.

Biological weapons

Biological weapons are prohibited in the Netherlands. No company may develop, manufacture, stock, procure or possess biological weapons.

Online application procedure via Message Box

You can apply for a permit for weapons and ammunition also online via Message Box.
