Medical examination

During a job interview, you may not ask any questions about the applicant's health. The only medical examinations permitted are those which are necessary for the performance of the job. You have to state that the applicant will have to undergo a pre-employment medical examination in the job advertisement. Medical examinations may only be carried out by a doctor. A collective labour agreement (CAO) or any other regulations may oblige you to offer a Periodic occupational health medical examination (Periodiek Arbeidsgezondheidskundig Onderzoek, PAGO) during the period of employment. Unlike the pre-employment medical examination, participation in the PAGO is voluntary.

Medical examinations in the construction industry

Those who are first starting work in the construction industry or who have not worked in construction for longer than three years must undergo the mandatory physical exam. In addition, the collective labour agreement package for preventive care specifies that you must offer your employees various voluntary checks/examinations, such as:

  • Periodic occupational health medical examination (PAGO)
  • Voluntary initial medical examination
  • Occupational health medical examination for young people (AGO-J)
  • Specific periodic examination (GPO)
  • Contact (Arbouw) (Dutch)
