Labelling of food

If you sell pre-packaged foods in the Netherlands, the labelling must satisfy the Food Labelling (Commodities Act) Decree (Warenwetbesluit Etikettering van levensmiddelen). Obligatory instructions and warnings on pre-packaged food are:

  • Product name
  • Net quantity
  • Minimum best-before date or latest consumption date
  • Manufacturer, packager or seller information

Depending on the product, the Food Labelling (Commodities Act) Decree includes additions to the above list.

Claims

You must comply with certain rules if you launch a foodstuff and make any claims regarding its nutritional value, benefit to health or medical advantages. The rules differ per claim and per product. Information about claims can be obtained from the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (nieuwe Voedsel en Waren Autoriteit).
