Inland navigation vessels

Inland navigation vessels must comply with the Inland Navigation Act (Binnenvaartwet). This act promotes safety on inland waterways as well as promoting proper working conditions on board inland navigation vessels. The Act includes requirements regarding:

  • a vessel's condition, design and equipment;
  • working conditions;
  • the physical condition and professional competence of the captain.

An inspection certificate (certificaat van onderzoek) is required for certain categories of vessel. This certificate is proof that the vessel is in a sound technical condition.
