Inland navigation police regulations

The traffic rules for Dutch waters are included in the inland navigation police regulations (BPR). The rules cover subjects such as lighting, priority and sound signals. The BPR rules do not apply to:

  • the Upper Rhine (Boven-Rijn), the River Waal, the Pannerdens Canal (Pannerdens Kanaal), the Lower Rhine (Neder-Rijn), the River Lek (Rhine police regulations);
  • the Westerschelde (Westerschelde shipping regulations);
  • the canal from Ghent to Terneuzen (shipping regulations for the canal from Gent to Terneuzen);
  • the Eems Estuary (Eems Estuary shipping regulations);
  • the Dutch section of the River Maas (shipping regulations for the shared section of the River Maas);
  • the North Sea and seawards of the Wadden Islands (Collisions at Sea Regulations (Zeeaanvaringsreglement)).
