Import and export of cultural objects

Cultural objects (art and antiques) may often not leave the country of origin, or only with official permission from the authorities. For example, for exhibitions or restorations.

Importing cultural objects

Before purchasing cultural objects from outside the European Union, you must find out the rules that exist in that country regarding the export of cultural objects.

Exporting cultural objects

In the Netherlands, you only require a licence for the export of cultural objects if you export them to a country outside the European Union. Moreover, it only concerns cultural objects above a certain value and age. You may contact the Tax and Customs Administration, Customs Department, Central Import and Export Service (Centrale Dienst voor In- en Uitvoer, CDIU) by telephone, post or e-mail in order to request an application form for an export licence. You then return the form to the CDIU by post or e-mail. The State Inspectorate for Cultural Heritage (Erfgoedinspectie) will determine whether the licence may be issued.
