Driveway permit or egress permit

You need a permit if you have business premises in the Netherlands and you want to build or change a driveway from your premises to the municipality’s public highway. The permit you need is the All-in-one Permit for Physical Aspects (omgevingsvergunning). This permit was referred to as a ‘driveway permit’ (inritvergunning) or an 'egress permit' (uitwegvergunning) until 1 October 2010. You can obtain this permit from your local municipality. More information about how to apply can be found on the 'All-in-one Permit for Physical Aspects' page.

If you want to build an egress road to a provincial highway, you will need permission from the provincial authority. In considering your application, the municipal or provincial authority will take the following issues into account:

  • safe and efficient road use;
  • protection of green spaces;
  • protection of the appearance of the surrounding area.
